From 14-18 June 2026, the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) will host the 34th International Confederation of Midwives Triennial Congress in Lisbon, Portugal under the theme: One Million More Midwives.
Through high-level plenary sessions, workshops, symposia, presentations, and satellite meetings, the convening will bring together midwives, midwives’ associations, educators, researchers, and partners from around the world. This gathering serves as an opportunity to share knowledge ,shape the future of midwifery and sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn, and adolescent health (SRMNAH).
The Congress draws inspiration from Portugal’s iconic azulejos; decorative tiles that reflect the nation’s history, culture, and identity. This rich artistic tradition has influenced the branding of the 34th ICM Triennial Congress, symbolising storytelling, values, and collective progress.
Why This Matters
Each year, an estimated 178 000 mothers and 1 million newborns die in the Africa region. Most of these deaths are preventable with access to skilled midwifery care. Yet despite progress in recent years, many countries across the continent still face severe shortages of skilled health workers, particularly midwives, limiting access to essential sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn, and adolescent health services.
‘One Million More Midwives’ speaks directly to Africa’s health priorities. The Congress brings African midwives, policymakers, researchers, and health advocates together to share experiences, draw on global best practices, and build the collaborations needed to tackle the continent’s maternal and newborn health challenges.
